Hamburger Meat Recipes

Meat Pie Recipe

This Meat Pie Recipe is ideal is you are after hamburger meat recipes.

It can be enjoyed piping hot, straight from the oven or it can be eaten as one of your cold picnic food recipes. The meat is encased in a bread shell, making for easy transport. Our kids love this in lunch boxes. For this Meat Pie, you can use leftovers from our other easy ground beef recipes below.

  • A little effort
  • Preparation time: 25 minutes
  • Cooking time: 1 - 1½ hours for ground beef; plus 40 minutes for pie
  • Serves: 6 - 8
  • Ingredients:

  • 8oz / 250g back bacon
  • 2 lbs / 900g ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • ½ cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 4 fresh tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • a little oil for shallow frying
  • Meal planning tip: use leftovers from one of the hamburger meat recipes below.

    Dough:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1½ tablespoons (¼ oz / 7g) dried yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1½ cups warm water
  • 1 beaten egg for glazing
  • You will need a casserole dish with a lid. It is worth using one that can be used on the hob as well to save on washing-up. You will also need a 9½" x 12" / 24cm x 30cm baking pan.

    Method:

    1. Heat the oven to 350° F / 180° C.
    2. Fry the bacon in a little oil until it has browned slightly. Remove to a board. Trim off the fat and then dice the lean meat.
    3. Discard any excess fat that has melted in the pan. Brown the ground beef in 4 - 5 batches. If you attempt to brown it all at once, you will land up with a gray, watery mass.
    4. Brown the onions until they are a deep caramel color. This helps to give the dish flavor. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute.
    5. Add the ground beef and bacon back to the onions. Add the parsley, tomatoes, tomato paste and beef stock. Place the lid on the casserole pan and bake for between 1 hour and 1½ hours. The longer you cook the meat the better as a long, slow cook produces a rich and tasty end result.
    6. Make sure that the ground beef is not too watery; you want the meat to be succulent but quite "dry." You do not want a runny gravy. The reason for this is that you don't want the bread to become soggy. If the mixture is too wet, simply place it on the hob and cook it until the excess liquid simmers off.
    7. Dough: Mix together the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, olive oil and as much water as necessary to produce a soft dough. Knead the dough on a floured board for about 5 minutes. The dough should be soft and pliable. Place the dough in a large oiled bowl. Cover it with a clean tea towel or cellophane. Place the bowl in a warm place in order to allow the dough to rise (about 1 - 2 hours).
    8. To assemble:Oil the base of the baking pan. Once the dough has risen, divide it in two. Roll out half to fit the base of the baking pan. Pack the ground beef mixture on top of the dough, leaving an inch (2½ cm) margin around the edge. You may not use all the ground beef.
    9. Roll out the other piece of dough, making sure that it is big enough to cover the mixture. Place it over the ground meat, making sure that it meets the edges of the bottom layer of dough. Pinch the edges of the dough together. Brush the top with the beaten egg.
    10. Bake at 350° F / 180° C for 30 - 40 minutes, until the top is brown. When you tap the bread it should sound slightly "hollow".
    11. Serve your Meat Pie piping hot with a salad or allow to cool and transport in the baking tin if you are taking it on a picnic.

You can use any of the following hamburger meat recipes instead of the one above, but just make sure that the mixture is not too wet:
